The hotel is situated on the site of the former mansion of Leland Stanford who was a railroad baron, governor and founder of Stanford University. After the mansion burned in the Great Fire of 1906, the current structure was built in 1912 and was opened as a hotel in 1972 with extensive refurbishing being made beginning in 1989.
